Things to do on Grand Cayman

Twenty years of it, kept current. Grand Cayman is a globally recognised diving destination and a very good place to eat, and the two facts are closer together than you would think.

In and on the water — Grand Cayman

In and on the water

Grand Cayman is a globally recognised diving destination, and you are staying on top of it. Calypso Cove is a one-minute walk from the dive boat docks; Evans Close is eight minutes. Snorkel gear, two beach chairs and a cooler come with your suite.

Under it

The reason half the island is here.

  • Dive Tech
  • Shore dives from the dock
  • Cemetery Beach
  • Snorkel gear included with your suite

On top of it

Both of these deliver to the door and collect afterwards, which matters if you have not hired a car. Paddleboards, kayaks, sea scooters, floats.

  • Adventura Cayman
  • Paradise Paddle Cayman
Where to eat — Grand Cayman

Where to eat

The list Eileen gives every guest, grouped by where you would drive rather than by cuisine, because at six in the evening that is the actual question. Sunday brunch on this island is a competitive sport.

Around the corner, West Bay

Close enough to walk back from.

  • Heritage Kitchen
  • Macabuca
  • Calypso Grill
  • Morgan’s

Caribbean Plaza, West Bay Road

Three of them share one car park, so nobody has to agree in advance.

  • Uncle Liu’s
  • San Si Wu
  • Coconut Room

Camana Bay

Worth the drive when the evening is the point, not just dinner.

  • Yallah
  • Carnivore
  • Bacaro
  • Agua

George Town and around

Including the island’s own brewery, on Dorcy Drive.

  • 19-81 Brewing Co
  • Ragazzi
  • Cimboco
  • Peppers
  • Chicken Chicken
Stingrays, starfish and the East End — Grand Cayman

Stingrays, starfish and the East End

Stingray City and Starfish Point with Red Sail, the bioluminescence tour after dark, and the drive east to the Blow Holes, Rum Point and the Botanic Park.

  • Stingray City
  • Starfish Point
  • Bioluminescence tour
  • Pedro St. James
  • Parrot Sanctuary
  • Turtle Centre
Evenings and live music — Grand Cayman

Evenings and live music

Sunset first, then whichever of these has a band on. Macabuca does the Monday BBQ buffet; The Wharf does lobster bisque and salsa night.

  • The Sandbar
  • The Wharf
  • Coccoloba
  • Ms Piper’s
  • The Hive
  • Anchor & Den
  • Lazy Lizard

Sunday brunch, ranked

The Anchor and Den for the global-cuisine buffet. Luca at Caribbean Club for modern Italian with beach views. Seven at the Ritz-Carlton for the most luxurious version, buffet style with unlimited premium drinks. Catalina at Hotel Indigo from 12:30 to 3. Tukka out east for local BBQ and carving stations.

Eating well for less

Peppers, Macabuca on Monday for the BBQ buffet, Heritage Kitchen for the sunset, Chicken Chicken when nobody can decide, and Cimboco. Every suite has a kitchen, and Fosters is five minutes away — cooking two nights out of seven changes what the week costs.

The gear is already there

Snorkel gear, two beach chairs and a cooler come with every suite. Calypso Cove is a one-minute walk from the dive boat docks; Evans Close is eight. You do not need to hire anything to have a good first morning.

This is the short version. Guests get the full guidebook — the one reviewers call phenomenal — with opening times, the walk-in places, and which beach is calm depending on the wind that week. Check dates for a suite
